We know the road, we know the properties and we know the boilers, because most of them are the same brands we work on every week. The village is largely off the mains gas grid, which makes it exactly the kind of place BTD was built to serve. Back to home Distance from our baseApproximately 2 miles south of our Broad Town workshop. Base address: Pye Lane, Broad Town, Swindon, SN4 7RR. The character of Broad HintonBroad Hinton is a small downland village with a mix of stone-and-thatch cottages around the church, older brick farmhouses on the higher ground and pockets of post-war housing along the main road. Being tucked under the escarpment means it catches the weather, which has real consequences for oil-fired systems and outside tank installations. Property types we work on hereThe typical Broad Hinton property is a two- or three-bed home with an external oil tank feeding a Grant, Worcester or Firebird boiler in a utility, garage or outhouse. Some of the older cottages still have solid fuel back-boilers that are ready to come out, and the farmhouses often have larger cylinders and hot water demands than modern kit is sized for. Here's what we deal with regularly in Broad Hinton. Weather-related boiler lockouts Storm-driven wind through poorly terminated flues will drop a boiler out overnight. We check flue routing properly, not just clean the burner. Tank corrosion and single-skin tanks Rural sites often have older single-skin steel tanks. We replace to bunded plastic to OFTEC siting rules and handle the environmental risk assessment properly. Undersized cylinders in farmhouses Large households outgrow their hot water storage. We size cylinders and unvented systems against actual demand, not a rule of thumb. Sludge and airlocks in extended cottages Extensions added over decades create dead legs and traps. Power flushing followed by decent inhibitor makes a real difference.
