Materials, methods, brand differences and the specific situations we deal with week in, week out across Wiltshire. ### Radiator design | the part most people skip A well-designed heating system starts at the radiators, not the boiler. Every room's heat loss depends on external walls, ceiling type, floor construction, window area and desired temperature. Correctly sized radiators warm the space at a sensible flow temperature (55–65°C in most modern systems), letting the boiler modulate and condense properly. Undersized radiators force higher flow temperatures, which stops condensing boilers from condensing, and immediately costs you double-digit percentage points of efficiency. We size radiators room by room, not by rule of thumb. ### Sealed vs vented systems Most modern installations are sealed, pressurised with an expansion vessel, no loft tanks. Cleaner, safer, no risk of loft-tank overflow. Vented systems (with a feed-and-expansion tank) are still valid on older regular-boiler set-ups, and we service and repair plenty. Converting from vented to sealed at the same time as a new boiler is a common upgrade and often makes long-term sense, but not always. We'll advise honestly at survey. ### Cylinders | vented, unvented and G3 Unvented cylinders (mains-pressure hot water, no loft tank) deliver strong, balanced hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously, ideal for family homes with two or three bathrooms. They require G3 unvented-competent installation, annual safety checks and specific discharge pipework, all of which we're qualified for and hold current registration on. Vented cylinders remain a solid, low-maintenance option where mains pressure is poor or a loft tank is easy to keep. ### Controls, zoning and modern efficiency The biggest efficiency wins in most Wiltshire homes come from controls, not the boiler. Zoning heating so that upstairs and downstairs can run to different times and temperatures typically saves 10–20% of heating fuel. TRVs on every radiator (bar the one in the room with the thermostat) prevent overheating. Weather compensation reduces the boiler flow temperature on mild days, unlocking more condensing hours. Smart thermostats give useful holiday control and per-zone scheduling. All of it can be added to an existing system in a day or two, no full replacement required. ### Extensions, additions and system rebalancing Adding radiators to an existing system without recalculating flow rates and rebalancing is a common cause of cold upstairs radiators.
